Stump Grinding is the process of crushing and pulverizing an old tree stump with a machine designed specifically for that purpose. The machine looks similar to a riding lawnmower and has a blade that cuts and grinds the wood of the stump down to just below ground level. This allows the stump to be covered with soil and grass, making it hard to tell where the original stump was. It also prevents the stump from attracting termites and other pests that are looking for an easy meal.
Removing the old stump also frees up space in your yard for landscaping, patios, or other outdoor activities that would be impossible if you had to maneuver around the tripping and lawnmower hazards of an unwanted stump. During a Stump Grinding service, one of our tree professionals will assess the stump to determine the best approach for removal. Generally, a small to medium-sized stump can be ground down within an hour or two. However, larger or more complex stumps may take longer to grind down.
How Far Does Stump Grinding Go?
The amount of time it takes to grind down a stump depends on the size and location of the stump as well as its root system. Typically, we grind the stump to about 6 to 12 inches below the surface of the soil. This ensures that the remaining roots are not able to sprout and create new trees, reducing the chances of future issues.
We also take the time to remove any surface roots that are visible. The resulting wood chips can be used as mulch on-site or left to decompose in the hole where the stump once stood. If you choose to import soil and fill the hole, we can also plant grass seed to make it blend in with the surrounding landscape.
Can Stumps Grow Back After Stump Grinding?
Some species of stumps, such as crape myrtles and Chinaberry trees, have a tendency to re-grow after stump grinding. However, by following up on stump grinding with a commercial root killer, they can be slowed or stopped from growing back.
While stump grinding eliminates the tripping and lawnmower safety hazards of an old stump, it does not fully remove all of the roots that were underground. This is why it’s important to follow up on this service with a root killing treatment to prevent any unwanted growth. This is also why we recommend having your soil tested after a stump is removed to find out exactly what type of fertilizer you will need to restore its health and promote new growth.
