Landscaping and Tree Trimming

Whether your tree is old or young, it needs regular trimming to maintain its shape and health. Some pruning tasks are easy for a homeowner to complete, like removing dead branches and shrubs, while other jobs require a professional with the right equipment and expertise.

Some pruning goals include reducing plant disease, opening up vistas, improving safety and controlling size. Pruning can also remove obstructive growth, reduce or eliminate hazardous conditions, correct structural flaws, and promote fruit production.

When a tree is pruned, it creates a wound in the wood that has to heal quickly. To minimize damage and encourage fast healing, the pruning cuts should be made in a specific order. A skilled pruner will first remove any dead, broken or diseased branches that can weaken the structure of the tree and cut these limbs back to their point of origin or to a strong lateral branch or shoot. This opens the canopy to more sunlight and air, which is essential for healthy trees.

Next, the pruner will thin the crown by removing select live branches to reduce overall density and allow sunlight to reach lower limbs. This helps reduce stress on selected limbs caused by gravity, wind or snow. Lastly, the pruning cut will be made outside of the branch collar (a slightly swollen or rough area where the trunk meets the branch). This prevents water from entering the wound and helps reduce the risk of insect infestation.

If you are not a professional arborist, it is best to leave any work around trees and power lines to a professional that has the proper experience and equipment. In addition to minimizing the chance of injury, it is important that you stay at least 10 feet away from power lines to avoid being electrocuted.
