Tree Care – How to Properly Maintain Your Trees

Tree Care is the ongoing process of managing a healthy and productive tree population. This involves everything from proper planting to pruning and regular inspections for pest infestation, disease, or other problems that can weaken or damage a tree. This is especially important in urban areas, where trees have to contend with more environmental stresses than in forested areas. It’s also essential to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress in your trees, so that if any issues develop, you can take immediate action.

Trees that are planted improperly or are left unattended are more susceptible to problems that can reduce their longevity and impact the beauty of your landscape. Many of these problems can be prevented with a few simple steps.

Watering

Young trees need to be watered on a consistent basis, particularly in the first three years. Deep watering a few times a week is more effective than frequent light sprinkling, as it encourages the root system to grow into the soil.

Mulching

Mulching helps retain moisture, regulates soil temperature, and suppresses weeds. However, piling mulch too close to the trunk of a new tree can cause rot and impede the root system’s ability to receive oxygen. A mulch layer that is 2 – 3 inches thick is adequate, and it’s important to monitor the amount of moisture in the soil underneath the mulch.

Staking

A new tree may require support to stand up straight while the roots establish themselves, but a stake should only be used for one growing season and should be removed as soon as possible. Leaving stakes in place too long can reduce the ability of the tree to self-support and increase the risk of trunk girdling injury.

Pruning

Trimming a tree is an important part of maintenance, but it should be done properly to maintain a healthy canopy and prevent pests, disease, and structural defects. Incorrect pruning can be as detrimental to a tree’s health as no trimming at all. A well-maintained tree can help minimize storm damage and improve property value.

Inspecting

Insect infestations and diseases should be monitored regularly, and any problems identified should be treated immediately. It’s especially important to inspect your trees as the seasons change, as this is when a variety of pests and diseases are more active.

When selecting a tree care company, choose one that has experienced, certified arborists. These professionals can provide expert assistance with a variety of issues and are trained to diagnose problems early on. They’ll be able to recommend the best treatment options to prolong the life of your trees.
